International travel from Kenya requires careful health preparation, and vaccinations are often a mandatory part of the entry requirements for many countries. Whether you are travelling for work, study, tourism, or immigration, understanding the vaccination requirements of your destination country is essential to avoid delays, denied boarding, or quarantine at your arrival point.

This country-by-country guide helps Kenyan travellers understand which vaccines they need, how far in advance to schedule them, and where to obtain certified vaccinations in Nairobi through our travel medicine services.

General Vaccinations Recommended for All Travellers

Regardless of your destination, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that all international travellers be up to date on the following routine vaccinations:

  • Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis (Tdap) – A booster is recommended every 10 years.
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) – Particularly important if you were not fully vaccinated as a child.
  • Polio – Some countries require proof of polio vaccination for travellers from or through countries with polio outbreaks.
  • Influenza – Recommended for travellers visiting countries during their flu season.
  • COVID-19 – Many countries still require proof of vaccination or a recent negative test.

Country-Specific Vaccination Requirements

Saudi Arabia (Hajj and Umrah Pilgrims)

Saudi Arabia has specific vaccination requirements for pilgrims and visitors. Required vaccines include:

Note that Kenya falls within the African meningitis belt, so meningococcal vaccination is also recommended for travellers during the dry season (December to June), regardless of destination requirements.

  • Meningococcal (ACWY) – Mandatory for all Hajj and Umrah visa applicants. Must be administered no more than 3 years and no less than 10 days before arrival.
  • Yellow Fever – Required for travellers arriving from Kenya, as it is classified as a yellow fever endemic country.
  • Seasonal Influenza – Strongly recommended.
  • Polio – A dose of oral polio vaccine (OPV) may be required.

East African Neighbours: Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania

Uganda and Rwanda require a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate from all arriving travellers, regardless of country of origin. Tanzania officially requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for travellers arriving from endemic countries (including Kenya) and checks certificates occasionally at land borders and airports. If you are travelling overland within East Africa, ensure your yellow card is up to date before departure.

United States of America

The US does not require specific vaccinations for tourist visas, but immigration visa applicants must demonstrate vaccination against a range of diseases as part of the immigration medical examination. These include MMR, hepatitis B, varicella, Tdap, and others as specified by the US CDC. Immigration medicals for the US, Australia, Canada, and UK are conducted at the IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre, located at 78 United Nations Crescent, Gigiri, Nairobi. Bookings are made through the IOM MyMedical portal (email: iomnbomedical@iom.int, phone: +254 709-890-000). CA Medlynks provides panel physician services for US immigration medicals.

United Kingdom and Europe (Schengen Area)

The UK and most European countries do not require mandatory vaccinations for entry from Kenya. However, the following are strongly recommended:

  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Typhoid (especially for travellers visiting rural areas in transit countries)
  • Influenza (for winter travel)

South Africa

South Africa requires a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate for travellers arriving from Kenya. The certificate must show vaccination at least 10 days before arrival. No other mandatory vaccinations are required, but hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended.

India

India requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate for travellers arriving from Kenya. Additional recommended vaccines include:

  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Typhoid
  • Japanese Encephalitis (for travellers visiting rural areas during monsoon season)
  • Rabies (for travellers who may have close contact with animals)

China

China requires yellow fever vaccination for travellers from endemic countries, including Kenya. CA Medlynks also provides immigration medical examinations for Chinese visa applicants. Additional recommended vaccines include hepatitis A and B and typhoid.

Australia and New Zealand

Australia requires yellow fever vaccination proof for travellers who have been in a yellow fever endemic country within 6 days of arrival. No other vaccinations are legally required, but hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and influenza are recommended.

Yellow Fever: The Most Common Requirement

As Kenya is classified as a yellow fever endemic country, the yellow fever vaccination is the single most important travel vaccination for Kenyan travellers. The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), commonly known as the yellow card, is required for entry into dozens of countries worldwide. Since a WHO rule change on 11 July 2016, the yellow fever certificate is valid for life — there is no longer a need for a booster every 10 years.
