China Visa Medical Requirements

China requires a comprehensive medical examination for most work (Z visa) and student (X visa) permit applicants. The examination verifies that applicants are free from certain communicable diseases. Results are submitted to the Chinese Embassy or directly to your employer or institution in China. This examination is commonly required for Kenyans seeking employment or pursuing academic studies in China.

Required Tests & Examinations

  • Complete physical examination (general health assessment, vision, cardiovascular, respiratory)
  • Blood tests: CBC (complete blood count), liver function tests
  • Infectious disease serology: HIV 1&2, Hepatitis B (HBsAg), Hepatitis C (Anti-HCV), Syphilis (RPR)
  • Chest X-ray (TB screening)
  • Urine analysis
  • ECG (electrocardiogram — required for certain applicants and age groups)

China Visa Medical Exam — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a medical exam for a China tourist visa? +

Tourist (L visa) generally does not require a medical examination. Work (Z visa), student (X visa), and long-stay visas typically require a full health screening. Always check your specific visa application instructions or confirm with your employer or sponsoring institution in China.

Will I be rejected for the visa if I test positive for Hepatitis B? +

China updated its regulations in 2010 — applicants cannot be denied a visa solely on the basis of Hepatitis B status. However, certain communicable diseases such as active tuberculosis (TB) or HIV may affect visa eligibility depending on the visa category and employer requirements.

How long are China medical exam results valid? +

Medical exam results are typically valid for 6 months from the date of examination. However, this can vary depending on your visa type, employer, or institution. Confirm the required validity period with the Chinese Embassy or your sponsoring organization before booking.

Do I need a Yellow Fever vaccine for China? +

Yes. China requires proof of Yellow Fever vaccination if you are arriving from a Yellow Fever endemic country. Kenya is on this list. CA Medlynks provides the Yellow Fever vaccine and issues the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), commonly known as the Yellow Card.
