Canada IRCC Immigration Medical Examination (IME)

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires a medical examination — called an Immigration Medical Examination (IME) — for permanent residence applicants, certain temporary residents, and refugee claimants. The IME must be completed by an IRCC-designated panel physician. Results are submitted electronically to IRCC through the eMedical system.

Who Requires an IME?

  • Permanent residence applicants (all categories: Express Entry, Family Sponsorship, Provincial Nominee, etc.)
  • Work permit applicants for stays of 6 months or longer
  • Student permit applicants for studies longer than 6 months
  • Refugee claimants and protected persons
  • Workers in healthcare or childcare (even for short-term permits)

What the IME Includes

  • Physical examination: height, weight, vision, cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological assessment
  • Blood tests: Syphilis serology (all applicants 15+); HIV testing (applicants 15+); Hepatitis B (for certain visa categories)
  • Chest X-ray: required for all applicants aged 11 and older; or younger if TB risk factors are present
  • Urine analysis
  • Results submitted electronically to IRCC via the eMedical system

Recommended Travel Vaccines for Canada

In addition to the IRCC immigration medical exam, the following vaccines are recommended for travelers to Canada from Kenya.

Vaccine Status Notes
Yellow Fever Required Certificate (Kenya) Kenya is a Yellow Fever endemic country — a valid Yellow Card is required. CA Medlynks issues the certificate.
Typhoid Recommended Recommended for travelers from Kenya as part of standard pre-travel health
Hepatitis A Recommended 2-dose series; recommended if not previously vaccinated
Hepatitis B Recommended 3-dose series if unvaccinated; also screened in the IRCC medical exam

Canada Immigration Medical Exam — Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs a Canada immigration medical exam? +

Applicants for permanent residence, refugees, and certain temporary residents — including those applying for work permits or study permits valid for 6 months or longer — typically require an Immigration Medical Examination (IME). Check your IRCC instruction letter (IMM 1017E) or your eMedical portal to confirm whether an IME is required for your specific application.

How long is the IRCC immigration medical exam valid? +

Immigration medical exam results are valid for 12 months from the date of the examination. Your IRCC application must be finalized within this 12-month window. If the application is not processed in time, you may be required to undergo a new medical examination.

Does my Canadian tourist visa require a medical exam? +

Usually not. Visitor visas (Temporary Resident Visa / eTA) generally do not require an immigration medical examination unless you plan to stay for longer than 6 months or work in certain high-risk occupations such as healthcare or childcare, where a medical exam is required regardless of permit length.

What happens after the medical exam? +

Your designated panel physician submits the medical examination results directly to IRCC electronically through the eMedical system. You do not need to physically submit the medical report to IRCC. You will receive a Medical Report or Upfront Medical Report instructions. IRCC typically reviews medical results within 2–4 weeks, after which your visa application continues through normal processing.
