Australia Visa Health Examination Requirements

Australia requires health examinations for most visa applicants as part of the character and health requirements of the Migration Act 1958. You will receive a Health Assessment Package (HAP ID) from the Australian Department of Home Affairs or your registered migration agent. This HAP ID must be provided when booking your examination, as it links your appointment to your visa application in the eMedical system.

The examination includes a general medical assessment, chest X-ray for TB screening, and blood tests depending on your visa category and country of origin. As a Kenya-born applicant, a chest X-ray is required due to Kenya's TB burden classification.

Health Examination Components

  • Medical examination: general health assessment including cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological review
  • Chest X-ray — required for all Kenya-born applicants (TB screening; mandatory for applicants aged 11 and over)
  • Blood tests: HIV antibody test (applicants 15 years and older); Syphilis serology; Hepatitis B screening (for certain visa categories)
  • Urine analysis
  • Results submitted electronically to the Department of Home Affairs via the eMedical system within 3–5 business days

Important: You must have your HAP ID before booking your health examination. You cannot complete the Australian health examination without this reference number. Obtain your HAP ID from the Department of Home Affairs portal or your registered migration agent before contacting us.

Recommended Travel Vaccines for Australia

In addition to the mandatory health examination, the following vaccines are recommended for Kenyan travelers to Australia based on pre-travel health guidance.

Vaccine Status Notes
Yellow Fever Required Certificate (Kenya) Mandatory if arriving from a Yellow Fever endemic country. Kenya qualifies. Yellow Card required at entry into Australia.
Typhoid Recommended Recommended for travelers from Kenya as routine pre-travel health
Hepatitis A Recommended 2-dose series; recommended if not previously vaccinated
Hepatitis B Recommended 3-dose series if unvaccinated; also screened in the health examination for certain visas
Japanese Encephalitis Recommended Recommended for travelers to rural or northern Australia during wet season or for extended stays
Influenza Recommended Recommended, especially for travel during Australian winter (June–August)
COVID-19 Recommended Full primary series recommended; boosters as appropriate

Australia Visa Health Examination — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a HAP ID? +

A HAP ID (Health Assessment Package ID) is a unique reference number issued by the Australian Department of Home Affairs. It links your visa application to your health examination record and allows your designated panel physician to submit your results electronically via the eMedical system. You must provide your HAP ID when booking your health examination — examinations cannot be conducted without it.

Is the Australia health examination required for all visa types? +

Most Australian visa categories require a health examination, including partner visas (subclass 309/100, 820/801), student visas (subclass 500), skilled worker and employer-sponsored visas, and permanent residence applications. Tourist visas (eVisitor subclass 651 and ETA subclass 601) typically do not require a health examination unless specific risk factors are identified by the Department of Home Affairs.

How long does the health examination take? +

The examination appointment itself takes approximately 1–2 hours. Chest X-ray results are usually available within 24–48 hours. Blood test results typically take 2–3 days. The complete medical report is submitted electronically to the Australian Department of Home Affairs within 3–5 business days from the date of your examination.

What if my chest X-ray shows abnormalities? +

If any abnormality is detected in your chest X-ray or other test results, you may be referred for further diagnostic evaluation or specialist testing. CA Medlynks will guide you through the process and advise on next steps, including any additional investigations required before results can be submitted to the Department of Home Affairs. An abnormal result does not automatically disqualify a visa application — the Department assesses each case individually.
